Fabric Acorns: A Simple Fall Craft for Moms and Daughters

There’s something magical about slowing down to create with the treasures you find in nature, and making a simple fall craft together, mom and daughter.

On our latest adventure, Millie Grace and I found a plethora of acorn caps scattered beneath an old oak tree … tiny hats just waiting to be worn again. Of course, our creative hearts couldn’t resist! After a little scrolling on Pinterest (because it never fails), we found the perfect idea: fabric acorns.

The sweet little creations are the perfect blend of fall charm and handmade fun. They are simple enough for kids, yet beautiful enough to display or gift.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • Fabric scraps in your favorite fall colors and patterns
  • A cup (for tracing your circles)
  • Chalk or washable marker
  • Scissors
  • Needle and thread
  • Polyfil stuffing
  • Hot glue gun (This is my favorite one!) https://amzn.to/4ocaz1i
  • Acorn caps (a.k.a. “hats” you found on your walk!)

How to Make Fabric Acorns

First, use a cup to trace a perfect circle on your fabric. (We used white chalk)

Next, cut out your circle.

With your needle and thread, stitch around the edge of the fabric using long stitches.

Gently pull the thread to gather the fabric into a small pouch shape.

Next, add a bit of Polyfil stuffing to your pouch.

Pull your thread tight and tie it off to form a little fabric ball.

Finally, add a dab of hot glue to your acorn cap and press it onto the top of your fabric acorn.

A Moment of Reflection

As we worked, I couldn’t help but smile. These tiny acorns remind me that creativity often begins with simple things : a walk, a moment of curiosity, a handful of “hats” on the ground.

And, it’s not about perfection. It’s about presence.

Creating together opens the door to connection, laughter, and wonder; and those are the things that truly take root in our daughters’ hearts.
